Norman McCanch -  Artist and naturalist

Desert Wheatear, Reculver, Kent

Illustrations

My illustrations tend to represent an accurate depiction of some aspect of the plumage or behaviour of my subject which would be recognisable to a viewer. I have produced some illustrations for educational or identification work in the past, and find this both interesting and challenging.

Paintings

Paintings aim to capture something of the character of my subjects in the context of their environment. In recent years I have tended to reduce the size of the bird or animal in my paintings so that they take their place as a small, but significant, accent in the wider landscape.

Landscapes

In the past few years I have spent more time painting rural landscapes, often without any overt presence of birds or animals. I have been particularly drawn to painting morning and evening skies. My studio window faces south-west and I can often paint in watercolour directly from the changing sky as dusk draws in.
